Biographical Museum - Historic House - Local History - American History

This National Historic Landmark is an outstanding examples of domestic Gothic Revival architecture. The historic house incorporates a stone house that was a Revolutionary War headquaters of General George Washington and the site of Aaron Burr’s marriage to Theodosia Prevost.

Directions
Route 17 (north or south) to Hollywood Avenue exit. Take Hollywood Avenue west to Franklin Turnpike, turn right and go 1/2 mile to The Hermitage on the left.

Garden State Parkway to exit 165, go west 1/3 mile on Ridgewood Av. to Route 17 North on right. Follow the directions above.

New Jersey Turnpike to exit 16W to Route 3 West, exit at Route 17 West and follow directions for Route 17.

Route 287 to Route 208 East. Exit on Ewing Avenue and take Route 502 (Franklin Avenue) East. 502 will become Wyckoff Avenue. Turn right onto Franklin Turnpike in Waldwick, The Hermitage is on the right.

From New York City:
George Washington Bridge to Route 4 West to Route 17 North, follow directions for Route 17.

By train: New Jersey Transit Bergen County/Main Line to Waldwick Station.. Walk east 2 blocks. Turn right on Franklin Turnpike and go south about 3 blocks. The Hermitage is on the right.

About the Museum
The Friends of the Hermitage, Inc., is committed to restoring, maintaining and interpreting The Hermitage, along with its grounds and its outbuildings in cooperation with the State of New Jersey, the owner of the historic house. The non-profit membership organization offers tours of the Hermitage, exhibitiond based on the collections, and diverse educational programming at the Hermitage Education and Conference Center on the site.

The Hermitage in Ho-Ho-Kus, New Jersey, is a National Historic Landmark, due to its significance as one of the nation’s outstanding examples of domestic Gothic Revival architecture. The historic house incorporates a stone house that was a Revolutionary War headquaters of General George Washington and the site of Aaron Burr’s marriage to Theodosia Prevost. The house’s architectural appearances dates to the 1847 remodeling and enlargement to the design of architect William Ranlett.

The Collections
Today the historic house’s furnishings reflect the late Victorian lifestyle of the Rosencrantz family, its owners for 163 years. The museum collection is notable for its range of historic clothing as well as personal items and papers relating the Rosencrantz family who owned and lived at the site from 1807-1970.
